About Catawba County
Catawba County is the furniture county. Hickory built its name on furniture and hosiery, and the housing that industry left behind, brick ranches and split-levels from the 1950s to the 1970s on the streets around the old plants, is still most of what changes hands in the county's largest city. Newton, the county seat, is where every deed, estate and foreclosure in the county is recorded and heard. East of there the county runs to Lake Norman, and the Sherrills Ford and Terrell shoreline prices like the lake, not like Hickory.
Three markets share one county line. Hickory and the towns joined to it, Conover, Newton, Long View and Brookford, are older stock competing against newer subdivisions in the same price range, which is exactly the house a financed buyer walks away from and a cash buyer walks into. The Lake Norman side around Sherrills Ford and Terrell is retail money, and a sound house there should usually be listed. West and south of Hickory, around Mountain View, Bakers Mountain and the Lincoln County line at Maiden, it turns to acreage, well and septic, and thin comparable sales.
Towns in Catawba County with their own page
Hickory, NC
Because a 1968 brick ranch with a wet basement and the first furnace is the house a financed buyer will not take when a 2015 house in a Conover subdivision costs the same monthly payment. That comparison is the whole Hickory market for older stock, and it is the house we buy.
Newton, NC
Because everything legal in Catawba County happens here. Estates, foreclosure sales, deeds and liens all run through Government Drive, so an estate house in Newton is one drive from the office that has to sign off on it. And because the housing is old enough that most of what we are asked about needs more work than the owner wants to fund.
Conover, NC
Relocations, mostly. Conover is the county's crossroads, on Interstate 40 and US 70, and the people selling to us here are often leaving on a date: a transfer along the I-40 corridor, a closing on the next house, a job that starts before a listing could close.
Maiden, NC
Because the mill-village stock ages together. Houses built to one spec by one employer need the same work at the same time, and a financed buyer's appraiser has to price a house against comparables that all carry the same deferred maintenance. That is the market a cash buyer exists for.
Sherrills Ford, NC
Honestly, we turn more people away in Sherrills Ford than anywhere else in Catawba County. If your house is sound and you have two or three months, list it; retail demand on this shoreline will reward the wait. What comes to us is inherited lake property from before the lake priced this way, and owners on a hard deadline who need certainty more than the last few percent.
Claremont, NC
Older houses on larger lots that sit on the market because the buyer pool here is thin and the newer Conover subdivisions are ten minutes away. Estates, and owners who tried a listing.
We also buy in the smaller communities
These do not have a page of their own yet, mostly because there are only a few hundred people in them and almost nothing changes hands in a given year. They are still a short drive and we still buy in all of them. If your house is here, the answer is yes. And if we close a deal in one, it gets its own page.
- Terrell, the Lake Norman shoreline east of Sherrills Ford, on NC 150
- Catawba, the smallest town in the county, on the river that named it, settled by German Lutheran farmers in the 1700s
- Long View, a small town on Hickory's west side that runs across the Burke County line
- Brookford, a former mill town just south of Hickory
- Mountain View and Bakers Mountain, the unincorporated south side of Hickory, larger lots and the highest ground in the county
- St. Stephens and Startown, unincorporated communities northeast of Hickory and west of Newton
Not on the list at all? Ask anyway. If we can't buy it we'll tell you quickly rather than waste your time, and we usually know somebody who works that area.

How it works
-
Tell us about the house
Address, condition, and what's going on. Two minutes on the form or one call to (704) 481-6298. You don't need to have anything ready.
-
We set an appointment and walk it with you
Someone from Monthaven comes out and walks the property in person, at a time that works for you. We'd rather meet you than price a house off a spreadsheet. No inspector, no contractor parade, and don't clean up on our account. It takes about 20 minutes.

-
You pick the closing date
Usually 7 to 21 days, at a North Carolina closing attorney. Need longer? We'll wait. Need to stay a few weeks after closing? Ask.
Questions people in Catawba County ask
Do you buy houses everywhere in Catawba County, or only in Hickory?
Everywhere, with one honest caveat. Hickory, Newton, Conover, Maiden, Sherrills Ford and Claremont have their own pages because that is where most houses change hands. Terrell, Catawba, Long View, Brookford, Mountain View and St. Stephens are covered here and the offer and process are identical. The caveat is the lake: on the Sherrills Ford and Terrell shoreline we turn away more houses than we buy, because a sound house there nets more listed.
Where are Catawba County probate and foreclosure handled?
In Newton, the county seat, not Hickory. Estates are opened with the Clerk of Superior Court at the Catawba County Justice Center on Government Drive, deeds are recorded with the Register of Deeds in Newton, and power-of-sale foreclosure sales are held at the Justice Center. If you are settling an estate from out of state, everything runs through one address in Newton, and we work with your attorney there.
How fast can you close on a house in Catawba County?
Seven to twenty-one days is normal, at a North Carolina closing attorney. The title search sets the date, not our funding. A clean title in Hickory or Newton closes in about a week; an estate with heirs who have not all signed, or a well and septic property where the lender's old conditions never got resolved, takes the longer end.
Do I need a lawyer to sell my house in Catawba County?
Yes, and that protects you. North Carolina requires a licensed attorney to handle the closing and the deed, whether you sell to us or list with an agent. We pay the closing costs, including the attorney's fee for the closing itself. You are welcome to have your own attorney read the contract before you sign.
Will you tell me if I should list my Catawba County house instead?
Yes, in writing, with the numbers. A cash offer is below retail value; that is the trade for speed, certainty and no repairs. A sound house on the Lake Norman side, or a well-kept ranch in Viewmont with three months to spare, will usually net more with an agent and we will say so. The houses we are right for are the ones a lender's inspection would send back.
